In a high-scoring shootout at MetLife Stadium, Kirk Cousins and the Las Vegas Raiders (4-4) erased a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat the New York Jets (2-6) 38-33 on Sunday, snapping a four-game losing streak.
Special Teams Fireworks & Offense Trade Blows
The game opened as a back-and-forth offensive duel, with the Jets scoring on their first six possessions. However, Las Vegas kept pace through explosive plays:
-
Bowers' End Zone Dominance: Tight end Brock Bowers hauled in two touchdown catches from Cousins, including a 12-yard score on the opening drive and a 2-yard strike to start the second half.
-
Special Teams Spark: Trailing 13-7 in the second quarter, Dylan Laube delivered the first kickoff return touchdown of the NFL season, sprinting 95 yards to momentarily put Las Vegas ahead 14-13.
Despite Laube's return, New York took a 23-14 lead into the locker room after Geno Smith threw touchdown passes to Isaiah Williams and Adonai Mitchell, alongside three field goals from Jason Sanders.
Second-Half Comeback & Clutch Drives
The Raiders tightened the screws after halftime:
-
Cousins Pushes Through: Following Bowers' second TD catch, Cousins took it in himself on a 1-yard quarterback sneak to pull the Raiders within two at 30-28 late in the third quarter.
-
The 45-Yard Screen: Trailing 30-28 in the fourth, Cousins dumped a screen pass to Ashton Jeanty, who stumbled, recovered, and sprinted 45 yards down to the Jets 13-yard line.
-
Go-Ahead Strike: Five plays later, Cousins hit Jalen Nailor for a 2-yard touchdown pass to give Las Vegas a 35-30 lead with 11:33 remaining.
Cousins finished 19 of 26 for 247 yards, three passing touchdowns, and one rushing score.
Late-Game Defense Seals It
After New York cut the lead to 35-33 with a field goal, Matt Gay drilled a 53-yard field goal with 31 seconds left to push the Raiders' advantage back to 38-33.
With the Jets driving into Las Vegas territory on a desperation final series, Geno Smith launched a pass into the end zone with 14 seconds remaining. Safety Jeremy Chinn made a toe-tapping interception along the end line to seal the victory.
